National research studies by the AAUW and others have found that elementary school girls and boys show an equal amount of interest and aptitude in science and math. However, as students grow into adolescence and progress through school, a gender gap develops between girls and boys in their interest and pursuit of math and science classes, and ultimately, career paths.

Along with decreased interest in math and science, many girls also experience a lessening of self-esteem. This phenomenon limits a young woman's career and occupational choices and pathways as she graduates from high school and either starts college or investigates other occupational training opportunities.

GEMS is designed to counter this problem. Through our workshops and exhibits, girls are introduced to women in their own community who are successful in math- and science-related fields. Spending a day with these positive role models can encourage girls to imagine themselves doing such challenging, interesting work.

The AAUW Kona Branch has a decade of experience in inspiring local girls through the GEMS program.

AAUW advances equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research.
